Demystifying systematic and scoping reviews - Part 1: Planning the review

Presenter(s):
Robin Parker

Are you working on a systematic or scoping review? Have you heard of these review types before and would like to find out more? Systematic/scoping reviews are intensive research projects so having a good grounding in the methodology is important for a successful and impactful study. This workshop will provide participants with an overview of the methodology involved in conducting effective systematic/scoping reviews.

This 90-minute workshop (plus time for questions and discussion) is appropriate for undergraduate, graduate, and faculty across disciplines, with a focus on health and medicine. If you are thinking about starting, have just started, or are in the midst of a systematic or scoping review, this workshop will provide useful tips and resources to help you complete your project.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify the differences between a systematic and a scoping review;
  • formulate a research question that is appropriate for a systematic or a scoping review;
  • recognize the parts necessary for a well-developed protocol
  • outline the process of a systematic/scoping review

The second part of this workshop series will be offered at a later date and focuses on the fundamentals needed to develop comprehensive search strategies to retrieve studies for potential inclusion in a research review.
