Research Camp: Finding Publicly Available Data

Research Camp: Finding Publicly Available Data

Presenter(s):
Julie Marcoux

Publicly available data shared by various organizations across the world are hosted in websites, open data portals, research data repositories, and other locations. But even though most of this data is meant to be yours to take for your own uses, datasets hosted in platforms and websites aren’t always indexed in search engines. Learn how to find publicly available data and practice navigating open data portals and research data repositories with some exercises.

After attending or viewing the workshop session, you will be able to:

  • Adapt provided open data portal and research data repository search templates to locate platforms that might contain interesting datasets.
  • Use a provided list of steps to locate publicly available data on a topic of interest while taking into account effective search strategies such as locating open data portals for multiple levels of geography and government.
  • Recognize the unique characteristics of open data portals and research data repositories, as well as the special challenges of searching for publicly available data.

This is a hybrid event.
