You're the data. You're everywhere. You don't own it.

You're the data. You're everywhere. You don't own it.

Presenter(s):
James Boxall

Remember paper driver’s licenses, or you could fly under the radar, and there was no grid to get off. You were no one. You knew who had your data and why; it was yours and yours alone. We went from control to systems interlinked across boundaries, organizations and corporations. Data is stolen. Like everything stolen, you don’t know who has it, where it is, or what it’s being used for. Everything about you – past, present and future – connects to other sources not originally about you. You’re everywhere.

As a geographer, this intrigues me as it creates a type of placelessness where we only exist as data, online or imbedded in our screens as we walk down the street. It is the death of place and the identity you owned.
